Andy Wells to step down as Mayor: Premier

Premier Danny Williams has told Andy Wells he must step down as mayor prior to taking on his duties at the PUB. Williams says that public outcry over the possibility of Wells collecting two executive salaries has been effective. Here's link to CBC news story.

Andy Wells Can't Keep Both Jobs

A major development today in the Andy Wells controversy and his appointment to the Public Utilities Board. The mayor was scheduled to begin as chair of the PUB March 1st, but had also intended to stay on as mayor of St.John's for an undetermined period. However, Premier Danny Williams has now told Wells he will not be able to do both jobs. The premier has informed the mayor that he will hold off on the beginning of his tenure at the PUB until such time as he steps down as mayor. While Williams believes that Wells is capable of doing both jobs, he says the controversy has become such a distraction for all involved that he will not take over the PUB until he leaves the mayor' chair. The premier does say that he expects that to happen sooner rather than later.

This day should become that February municipal holiday we've always been missing. Either that, or the day Andy Wells resigns.
Call it "Good Ridance Day."

Andy Wells is a sad case...he has not known when to quit. Most people, with so many negative things said about them, would be running for cover...but he delights in it. What do you want to bet that he fights this and gets so many people writing in to the Premier that it is Danny Williams who backs down? If Andy is anything, he is stubborn.

Agreed A true valentine's day! Time to rejoice in a new era.

Anonymous: Even stubborn mules must roll over sometime. And can't see Williams retracting now in face of accepting huge public opposition to Wells' double-dipping.

I am not personally from NFLD but have been following what has been going on. Reading and seeing what I have so far, Mr. Wells is not going to go into that silent goodnight. He is going to fight tooth and nail to keep both paychecks coming, he's said it himself. The only way you are going to get him out of there is to call a Bi-election, of which he has no power over, and let the people speak for themselves, we do do still live in a democracy. Obviously his man is not well liked ( to say at the very least )and the premiere has the power to do call it. Send your letters and comments straight to the Premiere, he has he final say.

This is/was good news, but now the question is HOW DO WE GET HIM FIRED AS CHAIR OF THE PUB? And more importantly, why wouldn't Williams say that the double dipping wasn't appropriate? Instead he holds that Wells is perfect for the job and that he could do both. THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM! Williams is showing his true colours more and more...
